The English International School
Newsletter: Winter Term 2007
EIS is now half way through its first year. We
celebrated by welcoming a much delayed arrival of winter. The campus is
bright white and very picturesque, especially on the many brilliant crisp
sunny days we have had. The gardeners do a magnificent job of clearing the
paths and play area, and in so doing, have built up snow banks which have
quickly been converted into snowmen (Wolves won the House competition),
slides, igloos and snowball battle lines. The rest of the pitches now sport
two Cross Country Ski trails, and this sport is now confirmed as a favourite
with the pupils.
The physical education programme has not suffered
any seasonal disruption. We have managed to play out on almost every day,
including touch rugby, basketball and football. The practice has paid off,
as Mr Hume’s team won their match last month, a great victory away from
home, supported by our charismatic cheerleading team. Well done! Indoors,
there is a lot of gymnastics and dance, and we have now moved to a newer and
larger sports hall, so seniors and juniors alike get a fortnightly chance to
play in a large weatherproof arena. The seniors are doing very well at
their swimming sessions, with some complete beginners now mobile in the
pool, and some of the better swimmers are improving their stoke techniques
and stamina.
The school continues to grow, and we have welcomed
new pupils and staff. A special word of thanks is due to Mrs Shirley Bruce
who did sterling work with the juniors last term, at very short notice, and
we wish her and Rob every happiness and warmth in their new adventure in
Kuwait. Mr Kurt Botha is now full time with the expanding Nursery &
Reception children, and Miss Val Buzeta has taken over the reins with Years
3&4. Lots of good works from these and other classes can be seen on the
walls – as well as heard through them! There is an open afternoon on 15
March, to which all visitors will be most welcome. This follows our first
parents’ meeting last month, which was very helpful for those who braved the
snows to get here.
With the Year 10 cohort starting in September, work
is well under way planning our first GCSE courses. We will be offering a
complete set of the key subjects, and will expect most students to study for
up to ten subjects from a choice of a dozen or so. We anticipate welcoming
new students to Year 10, and to every other year group in September, as well
as the steady flow of mid year new pupils.
The web site is developing, and we hope you enjoy
the changes, updates and fresh photographs. We have started a special
parents’ section, and will soon have more information about the Summer Club
which will take place in July. This is open to everyone, current EIS
children and newcomers, as is our new venture, Saturday English tutorials, a
chance for learners of English, aged 5-12, to practise their language.
Please tell everyone you know who may be interested. Courses start in early
March.
In summary, there is never a dull moment, and best
of all, we are blessed with a great group of pupils: for which my thanks to
all our parents and staff.
