The English National
Curriculum
The English International
School of Moscow (EIS) bases its programme on the English National
Curriculum, the body of skills and knowledge approved by the British
government and taught throughout England and Wales, as well as
international schools worldwide. This structure has the
flexibility and adaptability to underpin a sound academic English
language education which prepares students for entrance to
prestigious universities worldwide and for success in professional
and personal life. For the international community with mobile
jobs, it allows easy transfer to and from other British system
schools anywhere in the world.
International Diversity &
Languages
The curriculum is adapted to
suit the needs of the many nationalities of students at EIS. The
prime goal is a high quality of English language taught and spoken
in the school. We are committed to ensuring an English speaking
environment for native speakers and learners of English alike. EIS
welcomes those non-native speakers of English in whom the staff have
confidence in the potential to adapt quickly and make progress in a
wholly English speaking environment, leading to full competence.
Extra and separate lessons are
provided for such students to coach them and to lead them to a
confident level of fluency in English. Once the school is satisfied
that such students can cope effectively with mainstream classes,
they are integrated into regular classes, with a programme of
support maintained at a lower level. There is an unremitting
emphasis on the use of English at all times within the school.
The majority of pupils are
native speakers and have their skills and competence in the use of
their language extended and embellished, benefiting from the
experience of working and playing with a global community.
French is taught from age 7
and in order that all pupils should be able to enjoy as much as
possible of our hosts’ culture, everybody studies Russian language
and culture.
A Full Programme
The curriculum for all ages
starts with English, Maths and the sciences, and these subjects have
priority early on each day. Humanities include History, Geography
and World Studies, an integrated course that includes spiritual
understanding, social education and current affairs. EIS welcomes
children from all faiths, and ensures that respect for others’
traditions grow from knowledge of different faiths and cultures.
Art, Music and Design
stimulate creative and aesthetic development. The physical
education programme is an essential part of the curriculum, and
includes mobility (gymnastics and dance), skill and stamina training
(swimming and cross country skiing) and team games (football,
basketball, volleyball, touch rugby, field hockey and cricket). On
non games days, there is an activity session which works like after
school clubs, and allows enjoyment of a wider range of skills, from
chess to calligraphy, publishing to extra Russian. We are building
links with our local community, and Moscow provides a fantastic
resource for bringing learning to life.
All pupils are set homework on
a daily basis, with the amount and content increasing as children
get older and more responsible for independent study.
